What chimney flashing does
Flashing seals the joint between the roof and the chimney. Step flashing is woven in with the shingles up the sides; counter-flashing is set into the mortar joints and laps over it; a cricket (a small peaked section) sheds water around the uphill side of a wide chimney. When any part fails, water runs down the brick and into the roof deck.
